It’s not just winning, it’s how you do it.
Firstly I wanted to say thank you to the hundreds of members who have nominated me. I am so excited to have received sufficient nominations to enter the Liberal Democrat leadership race (though,of course, I welcome more!) I am looking forward to a strong exchange of ideas about how our party and our country can Move Forward Together and I can’t wait to get started.
Today I wanted to write about how I and my team will be fighting this campaign. I want the next few months to be a positive campaign among all the members and supporters of our party, so that, regardless of who wins, we can all work together. More than a campaign I want this to be a positive movement for change.
We live in a world of disinformation where social media can be used as a tool to spread hatred and ignorance. Too often people experience trolling, abuse and threats of violence which have no place anywhere; particularly within the political sphere both between and amongst political parties and sadly on occasion even within the Liberal Democrats.
As a member of the Lib Dems as well as a candidate I believe we must aim higher and lead by example, we must hold to the ideal of truth over lies, of facts over fiction and that political discourse can take place in a healthy and respectful way. That the issues can be discussed and disagreements can be had, but do not need to descend into insults name calling and abuse.
This is why, along with my team, I have developed the Clean Campaign Pledge and we are asking all of those who wish to volunteer for my campaign to sign up to it.
As a candidate for the Leader of the Liberal Democrats I pledge that there will be no negative campaigning about my opponent from my campaign. This includes personal attacks, push polling, or any forms of discrimination of bullying.
At all times my campaign will engage on social media and other platforms cordially and courteously.
As we pledge to do these things we will also do all we can to protect those who support us from online trolling, bullying and both racial and sexual discrimination and ensure that any wrongdoing we experience anywhere online or elsewhere is reported to both our team and to the appropriate moderators or authorities where necessary.
Throughout this campaign we need to remember that this party values every member and supporter. We should cherish diversity, of race, of sexuality, of gender and of ideas. Every contribution should be valued no matter how large or small, and this will be the message I will carry with me as leader of the Liberal Democrats.
